Why use a Rain Barrel?

  • To provide water for gardens when needed, thus reducing use of purified potable water for gardening (reducing
    your immediate costs for water)
WHEN:

Workshops are ongoing,  as needed, 9 am – 11 am, first and third Saturdays, April 2 through October 15 (no workshop on July 4 Holiday Weekend).

  • September 17
  • October 1

  1. I am a resident of the Howard County.
I have a question of how can I get the free rain barrel, where and when?

    Thanks,

    Xiaobing

    1. Thank you for your interest in the program.

We are waiting to see if this program will be supported this year. It’s been a great program for a number of years, done its share of helping to slow rain water and prevent the damage that it can do. However, under the new County Administration, we are not certain that it will be continued.

  2. The Barrel Giveaway will continue in 2016. The dates for the program are April 2, May 7, May 21, June 4, June 18, July 16, August 6, August 20, September 3, September 17, October 1 and October 15. Note there is no barrel giveaway on July 4th holiday weekend.

Barrels (with cut-outs for fittings) are given away at Alpha Ridge Landfill from 9 – 11 am, dates listed above, at the gazebo just inside the main gate.

Recipient will need to buy the fittings to make the barrel into a rain barrel. Volunteers will conduct a short workshop on assembly, use and maintenance of rain barrels. Only one barrel per residence is given out to Howard County citizens.

  3. Yay!
I apologize if this is a nit-picking question, but is there such a thing as a “rain barrel fittings kit” at the hardware store?

  4. Debbie, the workshop will go over where to get the fittings and what you will need. Sometimes the local stores will have these pre-packaged, other times not.

  5. Excellent – I was thinking I needed the fittings for the workshop. I appreciate your time. 🙂

  6. Is it possible to get another copy of the rain barrel fittings sheet? I took the workshop in early June and have misplaced the information packet. (I didn’t misplace the rain barrel 🙂

    1. We’re adding the fittings and general info to the web page, so they’ll be handy. 😉
